At the Wellbeing Clinic Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS is something that we get a huge amount of telephone calls for help with often the person who calls is desperate they feel like they have no where left to turn. Irritable Bowel Syndromeis a condition that affects as many as one third of the population yet there seems to be very little understanding of it. Until very recently it was dismissed as a psychosomatic problem even today western medicine seems to be able to offer little in the way of treatment or diagnosis, it appears that doctors give the diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome when they have exhausted every other possibility. Leaving suffers feeling isolated confused and distressed coping with symptoms such as:
abdominal pain
muscle cramping
constipation
diarrhea
Although no one is exactly sure of what causes irritable bowel syndrome there do seem to be some triggers such as stress, food allergies and hormonal imbalance it appears to affect more women than men.Having certain personality traits also seems to affect the condition people who are highly sensitive, overly nice or perfectionist and people who suppress their emotions seem to be more susceptible to IBS.
Acupuncture can be an effective way to manage irritable bowel syndrome the World Health Organisation in 1974 identified many conditions that are appropriate for acupuncture treatment. These relate to the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome abdominal pain, muscle cramping, constipation, diarrhea. Aside from helping with the symptoms of IBS acupuncture can help with reducing the potential triggers of anxiety and nervousness. Many of out clients feel that acupuncture significantly reduces the problems related to IBS enabling them to return to a better quality of life.
