Acupuncture and Parkinsons disease
Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 11:20AM Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of complementary medicine in existence but has only really been practiced in the UK in the last 50 years, traditional chinease medicine involves placing of ultra fine needles into carefully chosen points on the body. Acupuncturists believe that the body is divided into meridians these divide up the body into sections the acupuncturists believe that if these channels get blocked the bodies (chi) energy levels create illness.
Acupucnturists believe that the bodies energy gets blocked due to a number of factors both physical and emotional, (anxiety, stress, poor nutrition, weather conditions, infections, poisons or traumas.) Any one or a combination of these can create ill health and imbalances in the body. By placing the needles in specific points this stimulates the body to trigger healing.
So how can acupuncture help people with parkinsons although acupuncture is one of the most researched complementary therapies in the world a large amount of evidence is anecdotal although there has been some small studies conducted as to regards parkinsons.
Acupuncture can help with a number of the symptoms of parkinsons, including
tremors
walking difficulties
rigidity
pain
it can help to increase energy levels
induce relaxation
improve a persons appetite
improve sleep
increase a sense of wellbeing and reduce stress.
