At the Wellbeing Clinic we often see people who are batteling cancer and are looking for some dietary support looking at what you eat can be a proactive way of helping improve your immune system.
Whether you have cancer and are receiving treatment or you just want to minimize the risks, there are steps that you can take with your diet to help.
The immune system is very important in mopping up cancerous cells that develop in the body, and the liver is central to the body's ability to eliminate chemicals that can damage DNA, which in turn may lead to the development of cancer cells. These tissues can be supported by eating a good nutritious diet that is low in sugar and damaged fats and high in fruit and vegetables, good quality protein and omega-3 fats.
There has been a great deal of scientific research into plant compounds that can slow or inhibit cancerous cell growth, and we now know that there are some foods that have good cancer-fighting compounds. Whilst it is important that we achieve the advised 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. For someone who is trying to support there immune system whilst undergoing treatment it is suggested that they should aim for much higher levels.
The helpful foods to include in your diet are green tea, broccoli, garlic, turmeric, strawberries, soya (especially soya foods consumed in Asia), cabbage and blueberries. If you or someone you know would like some more information on this then it is a good idea to consult a nutritional therapist.
