Pins and Needles! (Acupuncture)

Acupuncture is one of the oldest and perhaps the most well known of the complementary therapies, it is used as a complete system of health care treating both body and mind. Some of the most common issues people use acupuncture for are low mood, anxiety, fatigue, digestive issues, headaches, fertility, hormonal imbalances, muscle and skeletal problems. Acupuncture involves piercing the skin with very fine needles in specific points, corresponding to meridians used in traditional Chinese medicine. Although we are not quite sure how acupuncture works it is believed that it has an effect on the surrounding muscles, along with neurological changes and body chemicals such as the blood. At the moment there is a lot of focus on Acupuncture and its success with fertility issues and the fact that it can help with IVF treatment. Research carried out in Germany claimed acupuncture can increase a woman's chances of success by almost 50% and decrease the incidence of miscarriage. The theory behind it's success is that acupuncture affects the autonomic nervous system, that control muscles and glands, this could make the lining of the uterus more receptive to receiving an embryo. Research suggests that acupuncture may help us improve the odds for our IVF patients achieving pregnancy and it is a recognised treatment within many IVF clinics
